3 Things I Learnt from Landscaping All Around the World

Some lessons you only learn by doing.

Others you learn by digging holes in someone’s backyard in London, pouring concrete in freezing weather, or lugging stone through the jungles of Nicaragua in exchange for food and a few beers.

I’ve been lucky enough to landscape in a few corners of the world: Australia, the UK, and parts of Central and South America. And while the projects were wildly different, a few core lessons have stuck with me.

They’ve shaped how I work. How I design, and how I create spaces that feel like they belong.

Here’s what those years taught me.

1. Always start from the base. That’s where the magic lives.

“Start from the base. Build up from there. Never cut corners.”

It sounds simple, but this is the stuff most people miss.

Back in the UK, we’d show up to terrace houses with no side access, tarp the hallway every morning, and tiptoe through like we were breaking into a museum. It was cold. Tight. Brutal. We had to use antifreeze in our mixes just to stop concrete from cracking overnight.

That experience taught me discipline, precision, and patience.

Here in Australia, the challenge is different. Wild weather, torrential rain, flash floods, and soil that turns to soup overnight. But the mindset stays the same.

Good landscaping starts beneath the surface. You get your levels right. You think about drainage before it becomes a problem. You build from solid ground.

Everything I do now, whether it’s a backyard fire pit or a sprawling rural design, starts with that foundation. You can’t shortcut the boring stuff. Because if you get that wrong, nothing else works.

2. Work with the land, not against it.

“You’ve got to design for the landscape, not impose something foreign on it.”

In London, I was building crisp hedges and tidy lawns. Over there, it’s all about control. Shaping nature into something ornamental and refined.

But that approach doesn’t work in Byron Bay.

Here, the land has its own rhythm. The slope, the light, the drainage. Every block tells you what it wants, if you’re paying attention.

We can get 200 millimetres of rain in a single storm. You need to know when to terrace, when to soften, and when to let things breathe. That’s not a skill you pick up in a textbook. It comes from years of being on the tools.

It’s also why I rely on local materials and native plants. They belong here. They thrive here. They bring in wildlife, texture, and story. You’re not just creating something that looks good today. You’re building something resilient, sustainable, and deeply rooted in place.

3. Everyone wants the same thing: connection.

“You build a fire pit... they’ll use it. Every time.”

You’d think after all these years and different countries, the biggest difference would be in the materials or plants. But it’s not.

It’s the people. And what they’re actually looking for.

It turns out it’s always the same.

People want to feel something.

They want a space they’ll use, not just admire. A garden that helps them slow down, breathe deeper, enjoy a drink with friends, or watch their kids run wild.

That’s what I design for.

I don’t just build for appearance. I build for atmosphere. For comfort, warmth, and story. Whether it’s a courtyard or a country property, I’m always thinking:

How can we make this feel like home?

Because at the end of the day, landscaping isn’t about how it looks.
It’s about how it feels.

Final thoughts

Every garden I’ve worked on, whether it was in the foggy lanes of London or the red earth of Australia, has taught me something new. But these three lessons keep showing up.

There’s a certain kind of beauty that only comes when you work with what’s already there.

I’ve never been one to impose. Not in life, and definitely not in landscaping.

At Gondwana, we don’t just design gardens. We listen. To the land, the materials, the way the light hits a slope at 3pm in summer. We take what’s around us and we work with it. Because to me, that’s not just landscaping. That’s respect. That’s common sense.

And honestly? That’s where the magic happens.

Local materials aren’t a trend. They’re the story.

A lot of people ask me, “Why local?”

My answer’s simple. Why wouldn’t you?

If we’ve got incredible materials growing, living, and forming right here, why drag in something that doesn’t belong? Why truck stone across the globe when we’ve got beautiful options just a few hours away?

Almost everything I build with is sourced locally, within a five-hour radius of Byron. The crazy paving might come from overseas now and then, but the core of every project is homegrown. Recycled railway sleepers from outback New South Wales. Spotted gum decking from Victorian plantations. Even the stone walls I build—most of it is picked and shaped right here on Country.

It’s not just practical. It’s personal.

When you use what’s already around you, you’re not just reducing the carbon footprint. You’re grounding the space. You’re creating a garden that feels like it belongs, because it just does.

Even with planting, I stick to what thrives here. Native, endemic species. Plants that have lived here for thousands of years. Not just because they’re low-maintenance or drought-tolerant, but because they bring life back.

In my own garden, native grevilleas keep the bees buzzing. Black cockatoos sweep through when the banksias bloom. Tiny honey eaters dart through the canopy. That’s the kind of beauty you can’t buy in a nursery catalogue. And that’s what we try to bring into every home.

Design for the land. Design for life.

A good garden should never fight the land. It should flow with it.

And a well-designed space doesn’t just look good on Instagram. It works. It invites people in. It creates moments. It turns a forgotten corner into a morning coffee spot, or a nightcap by the fire pit.

Every project we take on is different, but the goal is always the same: to create something functional, beautiful, and honest. Whether it’s a small backyard or a rural property with space to stretch, I’m always asking the same questions.

What’s the feeling we’re trying to create here?

And how can we make that happen using the land, the stone, and the layout?

Sometimes it’s undulating hills for the kids to roll down. Other times it’s steel-edged veggie beds framed by raw stone bookends. Maybe it’s a fire pit carved into a slope, or a pizza oven tucked beneath recycled timber beams.

We design with lifestyle in mind because a garden you don’t use is a missed opportunity.

Modern doesn’t mean artificial. It means intentional.

To me, modern design isn’t just straight lines and steel. It’s clarity. Flow. Function. It’s about removing the clutter and focusing on what really matters, the experience of being outside. The calm. The gathering. The connection.

Modern design and natural materials don’t need to be at odds. When done right, they bring out the best in each other. It’s a delicate dance. And that’s what I love about it.

The Forgotten Craft That Instantly Adds Value, Character, and Soul to Your Landscape

From paddock to perfection – how stonemasonry keeps me grounded

There’s something about stone that just sticks with you. I didn’t set out to become a stonemason—truth be told, I was thrown into the deep end. One of the first landscapers I worked for up here in the Northern Rivers had me building stone walls. No formal training. Just me, a bunch of seasoned old tradies, and a steep learning curve. It was one of those "learn as you go" situations. But the skills stuck—and I’ve been shaping stone now for over 25 years .

Handpicked, Not Mass Produced

Around Byron, we’re lucky. The volcanic history of the area (cheers, Mount Warning) means there’s basalt everywhere. Not just any stone—this is premium, volcanic, igneous rock with serious character.

Most of the stone I use is handpicked straight from paddocks or quarries. I’m looking for pieces with a flat face—that’s the gold standard when you’re building a wall.

A good flat surface makes all the difference. The less you have to grind or cut it down, the better the flow, the faster the build, and the more natural it looks.

We do use diamond-blade wet saws and grinders to fine-tune things, but the magic’s in the selection. It’s like picking the right players for a team—you need each stone to play its part.

Why Natural Stone Wins Every Time

Look, you could go for brick or rendered block work, but it just doesn’t have the soul. A natural stone wall—especially basalt—feels grounded, timeless, and quietly powerful. It weathers beautifully. Moss and lichen grow over time, and instead of looking tired, it blends right into the landscape like it’s always been there.

We sometimes use sandstone, but up here it tends to blacken and go a bit mouldy with the humidity. Basalt just holds its own. There’s a raw elegance to it that I love.

Not Just Walls—They’re Sculptures

I don’t build stone walls just for the sake of structure. For me, it’s about weaving stone into the broader landscape design. I’m not chasing the perfectly symmetrical architectural look. I’m more interested in flow—curved walls, Rainbow Serpent-inspired forms, organic lines that feel connected to the land.

I guess you could say I’m a landscaper who builds stone walls with a creative twist. I want them to feel like part of the story, not just a backdrop.

The Reality Behind the Craft

People often don’t realise how labour-intensive stonework is. It’s fiddly, it’s physical, and it takes years to master. I can knock out a good wall fairly quickly these days, but it’s not easy finding others who can.

Most experienced stonemasons are working for themselves, and the younger guys need time to develop the eye and the rhythm.

It’s a bit like creating a giant mosaic—every piece matters.

Sharing the Journey

One thing I’ve been trying to get better at is capturing the process—photos, videos, the behind-the-scenes stuff. It’s hard when you’re managing a site and juggling the logistics, but people love seeing the raw side of things. The paddock-to-project story. The creative mess before the magic happens.

So I’ll be sharing more of that soon—some mid-build shots, maybe even a few videos if I can wrangle one of the boys to play cameraman.

Final Thoughts

Building stone walls isn’t just part of my job—it’s part of who I am. It’s physical, creative, and deeply grounding. In a world full of fast fixes and prefab everything, there’s something incredibly rewarding about doing things with intent and integrity. The slow, deliberate way.
