Country Garden Design Starts with a Conversation with the Land

After 28 years and hundreds of landscaping projects across Byron Bay, Gondwana does one thing before anything else: we read the land.

Whether your property runs beef cattle on pasture, grows local produce for the market, or meets the mangrove-lined estuary, your garden design will be drawn from the block's aspect, soil, salty coastal winds and existing ecology. The result is a garden that ages with the land rather than against it.

Show Me My Block's Potential

Every Gondwana acreage design is drawn from the land and built to belong.

The Byron Shire, From Pasture to Point

Drive inland from Byron Bay and the rolling hills give way to verdant valleys before the land drops toward the mangrove-lined estuary and dunes. Rainbow lorikeets move through the eucalypts at dusk, and beef cattle graze pasture fed paddocks within sight of a rainforest gully.

Gondwana designs and constructs country gardens to connect to the natural beauty of its surrounds.

Design for Scale and Serenity

Imagine an arrival sequence that moves past a poultry run and a kitchen garden before opening onto green lawns and a pool framed by cycads, palms and ferns. A fire pit at the edge of a cleared paddock, beef cattle grazing pasture fed just beyond the fence line.

Native windbreaks that hold their shape against the salty coastal winds. Stonework feels as though it has always been there. Winding gravel paths inviting exploration between the gardens beds and pool.

Designing with sensitivity to a farm or coastal block means allowing the context of the land, and the life on it, to unfold.

Materials are selected from the local region. Ideas are drawn from the land itself. The result is a landscape that belongs to its place.

PROJECT FEATURE: BLACK MYRTLE COURT

How we Re-wilded an Elevated Acreage from Raw Land

The Black Myrtle Court block sat above open, rolling hill country, connecting to bushlands.

Gondwana rebuilt the arrival sequence with sweeping dry stone retaining walls that hold the driveway into the hillside, then let a native planting palette of kangaroo paw, ornamental grasses and mounded groundcovers roll down the slope as though it had always grown there.

A dry creek swale, crossed by a timber bridge, now carries stormwater away. An edible garden sits close to the kitchen door, easy to duck out to, while a circular fire pit terrace, cut into the slope, was positioned to hold the best of the property's rolling valley views.

Mark and his team did an amazing job landscaping an area for my sauna. He was professional, creative and a pleasure to work with. The results were beyond my expectations. And although we ended up using more materials than his quote called for, the time it took was less so overall the invoice was around 10% less than the quote!

I Would totally recommend Mark.

This is the second time Mark has done work for me and I wouldn’t go to anyone else for my landscaping needs. He really knows his stuff,  understanding what I wanted even when I wasn’t quite sure myself, and was respectful of the limitations of my budget. His team is a pleasure to have around and I couldn’t be happier with the end result of their work.

Frequently asked questions

  • What does a country garden design process involve?

The Gondwana process begins with a thorough site analysis: Mark walks your property personally, reading drainage patterns, salty wind exposure, dune stability, soil type and existing vegetation.

That reading informs the concept design, which is then developed into a complete masterplan with construction documentation, planting schedule and staging plan. The consultation process is transparent, structured and documented from the first site visit through to construction.

  • What makes country garden design different from standard residential landscaping?

Working land and coastal exposure both change the brief. A farm needs a zoning strategy that separates poultry, pigs or beef cattle from the formal garden and the market garden, while a coastal block needs planting and screening that can survive salty winds and shifting sand.

Both consider the arrival sequence and resolve technical issues like drainage design across a larger catchment, and a planting approach that feels like a refined bushland garden.

  • Can you manage my Byron project if I'm away?

Yes. Gondwana offers remote project management for clients who are interstate, overseas or otherwise can't be on-site throughout the build. Mark completes your site visit and design consultation in person, then works from an approved masterplan and staged construction schedule, so the key decisions are locked in before work starts.

  • Do I need to be ready to build to commission a country garden design?

No. Many Gondwana clients commission a masterplan well before they are ready for construction. The design documentation is useful for DA submissions, builder quoting, property sales or simply having a considered plan in place. There is no obligation to proceed to construction with Gondwana and no pressure to do so on any particular timeline. We recommend starting with a garden design before you're ready to build.

  • How much does a country garden design package cost?

Gondwana's landscape design package starts from $6,500 for farm, acreage and coastal estates. Your exact investment is confirmed following your on-site consultation. What you receive is a complete design documentation package you own outright: concept design, 3D perspectives, detailed masterplan, construction documentation, planting plan and planting schedule.

  • Can the masterplan be used with my own builder?

Yes. Your masterplan is yours. The construction documentation, materials palette, planting schedule and staging plan are produced to a standard that any qualified contractor can quote from accurately. If you later decide to build with Gondwana, that option is available. The design package is a complete, standalone deliverable either way.
