Designed Around a Slower Life

Wandering stone pathways that follow the natural contour, a vegetable garden beds within easy reach of the kitchen, outdoor living spaces that take advantage of the view, and nooks to sit for as long as the afternoon allows.

Endemic species are layered from trees to ground cover, reconstructing the ecology the land remembers. Native birds find their way back. The garden holds its shape with minimal effort through the wet season and the dry.

Project Feature Coopers Shoot

How We Transformed Unusable Land Into A Sanctuary With Site-Responsive Design

The Coopers Shoot block had a steep pitch away from the house, and nothing outside worth staying for after dark.

Gondwana terraced the site with structural retaining walls and engineered a drainage solution into the grading plan. Native planting established the ecology of the new levels. At the centre of it all, a fire pit that makes the hill worth walking down to.

Before

Steep slope. No usable entertaining space. Drainage issues throughout.

After

Terraced outdoor sanctuary with fire pit, native planting, and engineered stormwater management.

What It Is Like To Work with Gondwana

From the initial consultation to the final handover, our clients are extremely satisfied with the results.

Mark was a pleasure to work with and took my vision and added to it with his experience and knowledge. He was always pleasant, communicative and responsive and the final product is amazing. I would highly recommend him to work on any landscaping dreams you have.

Mark and his team did an amazing job landscaping an area for my sauna. He was professional, creative and a pleasure to work with. The results were beyond my expectations. And although we ended up using more materials than his quote called for, the time it took was less so overall the invoice was around 10% less than the quote!

I Would totally recommend Mark.

Janine Crampton

This is the second time Mark has done work for me and I wouldn’t go to anyone else for my landscaping needs. He really knows his stuff,  understanding what I wanted even when I wasn’t quite sure myself, and was respectful of the limitations of my budget. His team is a pleasure to have around and I couldn’t be happier with the end result of their work.

Frequently asked questions

  • Do I need a landscape designer?

A landscape designer takes your site from raw block or tired garden through a structured design process: site analysis, concept design, documentation and construction.

At Gondwana, our design journey covers everything from a levels plan through to plant schedule, material schedule and scope of works.

We are a design-to-construct practice, which means we can manage the full process from your initial consultation to the day we hand over a finished, warranted landscape.

  • What does the Gondwana landscape design package include?

Phase one delivers your concept design: an on-site consultation with Mark, a detailed concept design plan with spatial layout and design intent notes, 3D perspective views of your outdoor living spaces, pool design, stonework, and native planting, a curated planting design palette suited to your block's specific conditions, and one revision round to ensure the design reflects your vision before moving forward.

Phase two delivers your construction-ready masterplan: a complete site masterplan with levels plan, drainage design, stormwater management layout, hardscape, paving, retaining walls, and decks. Full construction documentation including technical drawings, specifications, and grading plans. A planting plan and schedule with species names, quantities, and spacing. Integrated irrigation and lighting plan recommendations. And a transparent, fixed quote for landscape construction if you choose to proceed with Gondwana.

The document you receive at the end of phase two is sufficient to take to any builder, submit to council, or use as the basis for a DA application.

  • Do I need to be ready to build to engage a landscape designer?

No, and in fact the earlier you engage, the more value the process delivers. Many Gondwana clients commission a masterplan well before they are ready to break ground, using it to clarify their vision, inform DA submissions, or simply have a considered plan in place before any construction conversations begin.

A masterplan is a design document first. It gives you something concrete to show a builder, or to hold onto until the timing is right. There is no obligation to proceed to construction, and no pressure to do so on any particular timeline.

  • Can I use the Gondwana masterplan with my own builder?

Yes. Your masterplan is yours to use however suits your project. Many clients take their Gondwana documentation to their existing builder or to open tender. The construction drawings, specifications, and material schedules are produced to a standard that any qualified contractor can quote from accurately.

If you later decide you would like Gondwana to handle the construction in-house, that option is available. But the design package is a complete, standalone deliverable either way.

  • How long does the landscape architecture process take?

Concept design is typically delivered within two to three weeks of your on-site consultation. Detailed design and full construction documentation take a further three to four weeks, depending on project scope and complexity. From first site visit to construction-ready masterplan, most projects move through in six to eight weeks.

Gondwana is currently booking site visits three to four weeks out. If you have a project taking shape, now is the right time to get in touch.

  • Can you design for clients who are overseas or interstate?

Yes. The initial consultation can be conducted via video call, with Mark reviewing site photos, survey data, existing plans, and any documentation you have available. Concept design and detailed design proceed remotely, with all deliverables shared digitally. A significant number of Gondwana clients are not locally based during the design phase and find the process straightforward.

For projects moving to construction, site visits are arranged at key milestones regardless of where you are based.

  • Where do you provide landscape design services?

Byron Bay, Suffolk Park, Brunswick Heads, Ocean Shores, Mullumbimby, Bangalow, New Brighton, South Golden Beach, Coorabell, Federal, Main Arm, Billinudgel, Broken Head, Myocum, Wilsons Creek, Upper Main Arm, and surrounding areas across the Northern Rivers.

For large or complex projects, Gondwana will consider engagements beyond these areas on a case by case basis. Contact Mark directly to discuss.

  • How much does a landscape designer cost in Byron Bay?

Gondwana's landscape design package starts from $3,300 for courtyards and smaller areas, $5,500 for residential blocks between 600 and 1,200 square metres, and $6,500 or more for acreage and larger estates. Your exact investment is confirmed following your on-site consultation, typically within these ranges.

What you receive for that investment is a complete design package: concept design plan, 3D perspective views, detailed site masterplan, levels plan, drainage design, full construction documentation, planting plan and schedule, and integrated irrigation and lighting recommendations. It is a standalone professional document you own outright, regardless of who builds it or when.
