LOCAL KNOWLEDGE

Creative landscaping for tricky sites

Sandy, salt-exposed soils on the coast. Reactive Krasnozem clay and red basalt through the Byron Hinterland.

Get the ground wrong here, and you inherit eroding slopes, failed retaining walls and a garden that fights you every wet season.

Every Gondwana build accounts for Byron's soil, drainage, humid subtropical climate and bushfire-prone land.

You'll have peace of mind your landscape is engineered for Byron's weather.

PLANTING PALETTE

Nothing imported, always considered

For homeowners who want to give back to the land.

A growing number of our hinterland clients want to leave the block better than they found it.

Where paddocks were cleared for farming, there's now a legacy of returning the land to species familiar with the soil and creating habitat sanctuaries.

We incorporate native plants and revegetation services into your design. Leaning on endemic species, layered with subtropical planting, Byron Bay is loved for.

WHAT CLIENTS SAY

Trusted by homeowners across Byron Shire

Sally Moore

Mark was a pleasure to work with and took my vision and added to it with his experience and knowledge. He was always pleasant, communicative and responsive and the final product is amazing. I would highly recommend him to work on any landscaping dreams you have.

Mark and his team did an amazing job landscaping an area for my sauna. He was professional, creative and a pleasure to work with. The results were beyond my expectations. And although we ended up using more materials than his quote called for, the time it took was less so overall the invoice was around 10% less than the quote!

I would totally recommend Mark.

This is the second time Mark has done work for me and I wouldn’t go to anyone else for my landscaping needs. He really knows his stuff,  understanding what I wanted even when I wasn’t quite sure myself, and was respectful of the limitations of my budget. His team is a pleasure to have around and I couldn’t be happier with the end result of their work.

Gondwana Landscaping- Hands down, best team in town! Mark takes landscape design to the next level, as far as art installations. Which will add that final touch to your property.
I had Gondwana transform my outdoor living areas; paving, fire pit, and gardens. Highlights being the epic stacked stone walls meandering through the gardens, Mark’s stone masonry skills are exceptional.
I highly recommend Mark and the team at Gondwana for the full spectrum of professionalism and execution of any sized project.

Frequently asked questions

  • Why should I choose Gondwana for my landscaping?

Mark Smith, landscape designer and stonemason with close to thirty years of experience, is on site for every consultation and is your single point of contact through design, construction and planting.

That means no juggling separate trades or separate quotes, and it means the stonework, usually treated as an afterthought, gets treated as the feature it should be.

Clients regularly single out Mark's stonemasonry as some of the best they have seen.

  • Do you handle everything from design through to construction?

Yes, we understand that not everyone has time to tend to their garden. That’s why we create low-maintenance gardens with hardy, drought-resistant plants, efficient irrigation systems, and designs that minimise upkeep while staying beautiful.

  • I only want a design, do I have to build with you?

No. Plenty of clients come to us for the masterplan alone, then take it to their own builder, or use it to lodge a Development Application before deciding on construction at all. The design is yours to use however suits your project. There is no obligation to build with Gondwana.

  • Can you landscape a sloping, flood prone or bushfire prone property?

This is where we spend most of our time. Much of the Byron Hinterland sits on reactive clay and red basalt, with sloping blocks, flood pathways and bushfire prone land all in play. We design and build with these conditions in mind from the first site visit, not as an afterthought.

  • Do you offer commercial landscaping in Byron Bay?

Yes. We work with local builders and businesses across the Byron Shire on commercial landscapes, from structural landscaping and stonemasonry through to planting that suits a commercial maintenance schedule.

Our low-maintenance, high-impact landscapes are well-suited to a variety of commercial projects, including hotels, resorts, airbnbs, and restaurants.

  • I live interstate, or I am often overseas, can you manage the project remotely?

Yes, and it is a bigger part of our work than people expect.

Every project runs on a fixed-scope design, so there are no surprises; Mark is your single point of contact throughout, and we keep you updated at each stage so you always know where things stand.

We've undertaken entire landscaping projects while the client was overseas and came home to find it finished to the same standard as if they had been here the whole time.

  • What areas do you service?

We service the whole of Byron Shire, including Byron Bay, Suffolk Park, Bangalow, Brunswick Heads, Federal, Ballina, Ocean Shores, Mullumbimby, Lennox Head, and Murwillumbah.

  • Do you offer low maintenance and native garden options?

Yes. Many of our clients want a garden that thrives without weekly attention. We lean on locally endemic and drought hardy species, efficient drip irrigation and mulching, and designs that establish well and settle in with less upkeep over time.

  • How long does a typical landscaping project take?

Most projects run from 2 to 8 weeks on site, depending on scope. Larger acreage projects with significant earthworks or staged construction can run longer. We set out a realistic timeline at the site visit and keep you updated throughout.
