Challenging Block in Byron Bay? Here's Our Sloped Backyard Landscaping Ideas

By Mark Smith, Founder of Gondwana Landscaping & Stone

Stumped on How to Turn A Sloped Block into A Functional Outdoor Living Space?

If you're like most of our clients, your block is situated on challenging sloping terrain. You're aware that these blocks come with their fair share of drainage issues, water runoff, soil erosion, and even flooding.

This could be reason enough to believe you've just bought a heap of unusable space. Luckily, you've landed here because we're big on transforming large sloping blocks into striking functional outdoor living spaces.

With almost 30 years in the game, we've got the local knowledge to solve the unique challenges that come with these challenging blocks. We're dropping our in-house solutions, and why we recommend calling in the pros for tackling this job.

Unique Challenges that Come With a Sloping Backyard

Sloped sites hold huge potential, but they also present unique challenges:

  • Poor drainage and water flow – With Byron’s heavy rainfall, a backyard slope without a proper drainage system can quickly flood, become waterlogged, or landslide.

  • Soil erosion – Exposed slopes lose topsoil fast, especially without groundcover plants or stabilising features.

  • Limited flat areas – Without terraced levels or retaining walls, there’s little space for a courtyard, play area, or elevated deck.

  • Accessibility issues – Steep gardens can be difficult to navigate without stone steps, garden paths, or wide steps.

Getting retaining walls or drainage wrong isn’t just expensive to fix, it can cause long-term structural damage. Leave it to the pros.

Though these are challenges, we see them as opportunities to create something pretty special. Who doesn't love winding pathways to secret entertaining areas or Basalt retaining walls that feel like a Tuscan dream?

Solution #1: Create Levels and Zones with Terraced Gardens

Breaking up a slope with levels instantly makes your backyard more usable. Terracing is created by installing retaining walls or decking that extends over the slope. Retaining walls are ideal to stabilise steep hillsides and reduce erosion.

Solution #2: Improve Access with Steps & Garden Paths

A winding path or stone steps turns awkward slopes into inviting (and sometimes hidden) garden rooms. We use stone pavers, wide steps, and garden borders to connect different areas and improve accessibility.

Solution #3: Manage Drainage and Water Flow

Byron Bay’s rainfall makes drainage a top priority. Our favourite drainage systems are natural channels that direct water flow safely through the property. Other options include hidden drainage or rain gardens.

Whatever the choice, all options should be well considered to prevent poor drainage, flooding, and soil erosion, while protecting your garden and home.

Solution #4: Rock Retaining Walls

Well-built retaining walls are key for sloping blocks.

We specialise in meticulously handcrafted basalt retaining walls. Each stone finessed into the perfect spot. They work perfectly for Byron's landscape and are a timeless design choice.

Solution #5: Add Raised Beds & Planting Zones

Slopes can actually help you garden smarter. I bet there's at least one pinned in your Pinterest board because they look awesome, especially for endemic planting in Byron. Plus, raised garden beds and planting beds are a cost-effective way to make uneven ground productive for a cottage garden vibe, structural intrigue, or edible planting.

Solution #6: Choose the Right Planting Design

Your plant palette can make or break slope landscaping. Careful plant selection ensures resilience, beauty, and manageable garden maintenance for years to come.

Think ground cover plants that knit soil together to reduce erosion or native grasses that embed delicate roots deep into the ground to hold water and maintain soil structure. More reasons to love endemic plants.

Solution #7: Build Outdoor Living Features that Work with the Slope

Feeling like there's no usable space for living on your sloped block? We're big believers a slope is no barrier to a great outdoor living space.

Some ideas we've incorporated in our designs fire pits built into terraces, elevated decks, play areas that incorporate water run off, or creating access to higher ground for additional dwellings.

A natural stone wall—especially basalt—feels grounded, timeless, and quietly powerful. It weathers beautifully. Moss and lichen grow over time, and instead of looking tired, it blends right into the landscape like it’s always been there.
