The Art of Stone Landscaping in Byron

By Mark Smith, Founder of Gondwana Landscaping & Stone

For nearly three decades, Gondwana has shaped landscapes across the Byron Shire and Northern Rivers.

Every stone we place is chosen to connect your home to the earth beneath it, creating a space that’s peaceful, grounding, and unmistakably Byron. Balancing structure and soul with handcrafted stonework, enduring materials, and design that feels like it’s always been there.

Our work stands the test of time.

Why Stone Landscaping Never Goes Out of Style in Byron Bay

Stone is the quiet constant in a landscape: it grounds levels, holds slopes, frames movement, and ages beautifully in our coastal climate. Unlike manufactured finishes, natural stone develops a living patina. Think moss, lichen, and soft weathering that settles your garden into place.

It’s as practical as it is poetic: retaining walls that tame topography, steps that flow with the land, and stone detailing that draws the eye without shouting.

The Secret to a Landscape That Lasts? Choosing the Right Stone

Our work begins with selecting stone that suits the site, the design intent, and Byron’s coastal conditions.

  • Basalt Rock (our local hero):
Born of the ancient Mt Warning volcano, basalt is strong, durable, and environmentally responsible when sourced locally. Its darker tones sit naturally among native grasses and coastal palettes. Ideal for dry stone and mortared retaining walls, sculptural curves, and structural features that feel anchored.
  • Sandstone (warm and timeless):
Beautiful for feature walls and natural steps. In Byron’s humidity it needs thoughtful detailing and maintenance, but when used with care it delivers an elegant, light-toned counterpoint to lush planting.
  • Granite & Bluestone (precise and practical):
Excellent for paving, pool edges, and coping where slip resistance and clean geometry matter. These stones pair well with timber decks, concrete, and native plant schemes for a refined, modern edge.

We source locally, often hand-selecting stone from paddocks and trusted Northern Rivers quarries. It lowers transport impacts and, more importantly, captures the authentic character of place.

How Stone Shapes the Way You Interact With Your Land

A timeless Byron garden is shaped by handcrafted stonework.

Levels & Retention

Terracing unlocks sloped blocks, creating usable garden rooms, safer access, and better water management. A well-built basalt wall holds back banks and defines space, framing views.

Movement & Transition

Stone steps, landings, and crazy paving guide the body and the eye. We use gentle rises, generous treads, and intuitive alignments so paths feel effortless underfoot.

Focal Features

Fire pits, water features, and pool surrounds become anchors for outdoor living. Stone moderates heat, resists weather, and delivers the tactile “weight” that makes a space feel permanent.

Planting Integration

Native and climate-appropriate species soften edges, knit structures to soil, and minimise maintenance. We detail planting pockets into walls and steps so growth and stone interweave over time.

It’s this integration of stone, planting, drainage, and architecture that keeps your garden low-maintenance, resilient, and calm.

Handcrafted, Not Cookie-Cutter: The Soul of True Stonemasonry

We learned the craft of stonework the old-school way: on the tools, alongside seasoned masons, reading each stone and placing it with intent.

That lineage shows in every wall we build. We look for flat-faced pieces for better bonds, faster builds, and natural flow; we shape with diamond wet saws and grinders where precision counts; and we let the material lead when the land asks for curves, not corners.

You’ll see it in the details: tight, honest joints; consistent courses where needed; subtle radius lines that echo the hillside; and steps that land exactly where your foot wants them.

Built for Byron: Low-Maintenance by Design

Natural stone is inherently durable. Basalt and granite in particular shrug off humidity and coastal air, keeping your garden looking sharp with minimal fuss. Pair that with native planting and efficient irrigation, and you’ve got a landscape that thrives without constant attention. The natural beauty of stone enhances the overall aesthetic appeal.
